Restoring Damaged Coastlines: PT APE Collaborates with Jejakin to Plant Mangroves in Teluk Lingga

Events

Sangatta – In recent years, the coastal area of Teluk Lingga in North Sangatta, East Kutai, East Kalimantan has experienced degradation due to human activities.

As part of their environmental commitment, PT Arkara Pratama Energi (APE), in collaboration with Jejakin and the East Kutai Regency Government, conducted a mangrove seedling planting activity along the Teluk Lingga coastline in Sangatta, East Kutai, on Thursday, June 12, 2025.

The event's committee chair, Eko Sugiarto, stated that the initiative aims to prevent coastal erosion, raise public environmental awareness, and support carbon absorption and climate change mitigation.

A total of 4,000 Rhizophora mucronata mangrove seedlings were planted in commemoration of World Environment Day (June 5) and World Oceans Day (June 8). The planting covered an area of approximately 20 hectares.

Utilizing Internet of Things (IoT) sensor technology and an Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based tree monitoring platform, Jejakin plays a key role in tracking and transparently reporting the growth of the planted trees—from their exact planting location to their growth progress and environmental impact. This technology ensures that each planted tree is traceable and its effectiveness in restoring coastal ecosystems can be evaluated.

"Through our monitoring technology, each planted tree can be tracked transparently—from its location and growth to its environmental impact. It’s not just about how many trees are planted, but how significant their contribution is in restoring coastal ecosystems," said Dewi Bintang, Impact Delivery at Jejakin.

Akhmad Wasrip S., Head of Mining Engineering at PT APE, explained that the mangrove planting aligns with a circular letter from the Director of Engineering and Environment/Chief Inspector of Mines at the Directorate General of Mineral and Coal, Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources. The letter urged all mineral and coal companies to actively participate in the 2025 World Environment Day celebrations, including through tree planting within their operational areas. In light of this, Wasrip called on all parties to join in planting efforts to improve environmental conditions.

Coral Transplantation

In addition to the mangrove planting, 500 coral reef cuttings were transplanted into the waters of Teluk Lingga in collaboration with the Alien Mangrove Forum.

During the same occasion, the Deputy Regent of East Kutai, Mahyunadi, welcomed the initiative taken by PT APE and Jejakin to plant mangrove seedlings in Teluk Lingga.

"This mangrove planting is a form of corporate responsibility from PT APE. Planting trees means creating new life, and these trees will go on to produce oxygen," he remarked.

Following the planting activity, Mahyunadi also called upon all companies to actively participate in greening efforts across East Kutai.

"We urge companies to proactively restore what they have cleared by rehabilitating the environment. We hope that mining companies across East Kutai will take part in reforesting the entire region," he added.

The event was attended by guests from the East Kutai Regional Leadership Communication Forum (Forkopimda), community and traditional leaders, university students, and school children. A free nutritious meal program was also held for school children as part of the event.
