In a world increasingly aware of its ecological footprint, sustainability has become a central focus for businesses across the globe. Among the frontrunners in this noble pursuit is Telkomsel, a leading telco company and digital ecosystem enabler committed to taking a proactive role in reducing the adverse effects of climate change. Through its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative, Telkomsel Jaga Bumi, the company has embarked on a remarkable journey to offset carbon emissions and contribute to environmental conservation.
On 14th December 2022, Telkomsel launched the Carbon Offset Program in collaboration with Jejakin. This initiative is a cornerstone of Telkomsel Jaga Bumi, which strives to open new opportunities for its loyal customers to actively participate in an environmental movement. Through the program, Telkomsel customers can exchange their Telkomsel Poin for the equivalent contribution of planting a tree, effectively offsetting the carbon footprint generated by their daily activities. This collaborative effort aims to safeguard the planet and support Indonesia's inclusive and sustainable development, guided by the principles of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG).
Carbon offset involves efforts to absorb the carbon footprint we produce and mitigate its negative impacts. Activities such as fossil fuel use, land-use changes, waste management, and industrial processes result in carbon footprints, including greenhouse gas emissions like carbon dioxide (CO2) and other pollutants. Excessive carbon footprints can have long-term negative effects on climate, temperature, rainfall, and overall well-being. Telkomsel’s collaboration with Jejakin through the Carbon Offset Program aims to counterbalance our carbon footprints by planting trees that absorb CO2 and produce oxygen (O2).
As part of the Carbon Offset Program, Telkomsel customers can participate by exchanging their Telkomsel Poin for mangrove trees through the Telkomsel website or the MyTelkomsel application. Customers can use the Jejakin calculator to estimate their average daily carbon footprint based on their mobile phone, laptop, AC, TV, car, and/or motorcycle usage. After calculating the total carbon footprint (in grams of carbon - gCO2), customers can contribute an equivalent number of Poin to plant a specific number of trees (e.g., 50 Poin equals 0.1 tree/2.93 kg CO2). Every 50 Poin exchanged is valued at IDR 5,000 towards carbon offset. Customers can also use SMS to exchange Poin for trees. They will receive periodic progress updates and monitoring reports via email about the trees they contributed to.
Amidst its dedication to fostering sustainability, Telkomsel Jaga Bumi has taken its green efforts a step further. On 13th June 2023, the initiative, in conjunction with Jejakin, embarked on a remarkable project to plant 15,060 mangrove trees in various conservation areas across Indonesia. This awe-inspiring reforestation endeavor was made possible through Telkomsel Poin donations from customers and contributions from the company. As a result, these newly planted mangrove trees are expected to absorb a staggering 441.2 tons (tCO2e) of carbon dioxide, exemplifying the transformative impact that collective environmental action can have.
Telkomsel’s unwavering dedication to environmental preservation goes beyond mere numbers and statistics. In a commendable display of holistic engagement, the initiative conducted educational sessions on climate change, carbon footprints, and mangroves, complementing the reforestation activities in Bedono Village, Demak. The involvement of representatives from Telkomsel customers, local communities, and villagers, as well as Telkomsel employee volunteers, underscores the power of collective action in safeguarding our environment for generations to come.
Through these initiatives, Telkomsel has proven itself not just as a digital ecosystem enabler but also as a true champion of sustainability. As a company that recognizes its pivotal role in shaping a greener future, Telkomsel continues to spearhead environmental movements that resonate with its customers and foster a more sustainable and responsible digital landscape. With Telkomsel’s visionary approach to CSR, Indonesia's digital frontier is not only embracing technological progress but also cultivating a more sustainable world for all.
