Creating a Self-Sustaining Circular Economy on the Cloud

Company News and Updates

Sustainability is an urgent global priority for governments and businesses. Failing to take impactful climate action could result in a 26.5% GDP contraction of the Asian economy by 2048. Moreover, if we maintain our current trajectory, the global temperature will rise by 2.6°C by 2100, leading to irreversible and catastrophic changes.

However, sustainability is not just about being responsible to the environment but also about creating long-term value for businesses. Southeast Asia’s green economy could provide up to USD 1 trillion in annual economic opportunities by 2030.

Recognizing the need to act urgently, organizations are embracing digital technology to monitor and reduce their environmental footprint. And Jejakin, a sustainability technology company in Indonesia, sees immense potential for organizations to scale their efforts.

“Our vision is to create a circular economy through our platform. By helping organizations and consumers offset their carbon footprint while economically sustaining local partners, farmers, and community, we hope to create a balanced ecosystem that mutually benefits nature and people,” said Arfan Arlanda, CEO & Founder of Jejakin.

Helping Organizations Take Meaningful Steps Towards Sustainability

Although organizations recognize sustainability’s importance, many still face considerable obstacles, such as manual monitoring processes. Besides taking up more time and effort, manual monitoring does not result in real-time, verifiable data, thus undermining a company’s ability to comprehend its impact and refine its sustainability measure.

Furthermore, many enterprises, especially small-medium businesses (SMBs), often do not have the knowledge or expertise to initiate impactful green projects or have limited access to large-scale climate change initiatives. This restricts their ability to contribute to climate action.

To encourage and enable organizations of all sizes to do their part for the environment, Jejakin has developed a carbon management platform to help them accelerate their sustainability journey. The platform features three core offerings, namely:

CarbonIQ – a carbon accounting tool that helps organizations understand their carbon emissions and product impacts.

CarbonAtlas – a monitoring, reporting, and verification platform that helps organizations increase efficiency and monitor the growth of their sustainability programs.

CarbonSpace – a carbon offset marketplace that allows organizations to finance climate action projects, such as reforestation, to offset unavoidable emissions. This provides individuals and SMBs an accessible and affordable way to contribute to climate action and reduce their carbon footprint.

Jejakin’s carbon management platform allows organizations to easily track their carbon footprint and their progress in offsetting carbon emissions.

“We understand that every business has unique carbon-offsetting needs and goals, which is why we work closely with partners such as Microsoft to provide customized solutions that meet their specific requirements. By leveraging Microsoft’s cloud technology, we have created a robust data collection, analysis, and carbon offsetting platform,” elaborated Arfan.

Jejakin chose to build 100% of its solutions on Azure as it needed a flexible, powerful platform that can readily receive data from a wide spectrum of endpoints – including mobile phones, drones, IoT sensors, Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR), and satellite data. It also allows Jejakin to swiftly analyze the ecological information to achieve real-time, accurate monitoring of carbon emissions and other environmental factors.

Furthermore, Azure allows Jejakin to easily share information on carbon absorption with forest managers and government regulators, enabling everyone to work together as a team to sustain the circular economy.

Creating a Self-Sustaining Circular Economy Through Scale

Scalability is a critical factor for Jejakin to select Azure. The cloud platform can swiftly scale to meet the increased demands of its applications. Jejakin also relies on Azure to drive the rapid adoption of its solutions by customers across sectors and even borders.

The ability to scale is vital for creating a self-sustaining circular economy. As the number of stakeholders – including businesses, consumers, farmers, and non-profit organizations (NGOs) – grows, it will make the circular economy ecosystem more resilient and magnify the positive impact that it can achieve.

Azure’s scalability makes it possible for Jejakin to grow and serve a multitude of enterprises, MSMEs, and NGOs. Today, Jejakin partners with more than 20 leading institutions across multiple industry sectors in Indonesia. It also collaborates closely with 30 NGOs, landowners, and government partners, with more than 10,000 caretakers in the fields.

One of Jejakin’s most significant milestones was its collaboration with the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy Indonesia, where it launched the Traveling Carbon Footprint Calculator program. As a continuation of the program, Jejakin has also engaged with Plataran Indonesia – one of the leading hospitality providers in Indonesia – to enable their guests to calculate and offset their carbon footprint. This allows the hotel’s guests to play a meaningful role in promoting sustainability and environmental conservation.

The application allows Plataran’s guests to calculate the carbon footprint of their activities – including flights and accommodations – and select ways to offset it.

Jejakin also partnered with Gojek Indonesia, the leading ride-hailing super app, to promote sustainable transportation practices. With more than 700,000 active users and over 2 million transactions per month, the Collective Tree feature Jejakin helped create enables Gojek users to contribute to sustainable practices with as little as Rp 1,000 (69 US cents) when booking a motorbike ride or Rp 2,000 when using car services.

Making Meaningful Positive Impact

Jejakin’s initiatives and platform have resulted in more than 1.7 million trees being planted and nearly 14,300 tons of carbon emissions being absorbed. In addition, another 10 million trees are being queued for planting.

Jejakin’s success and impact have not gone unnoticed.

The company has received numerous awards and recognition for its sustainability efforts, including Microsoft’s Partner of The Year for Social Impact in 2020. Most recently, Jejakin was awarded the 2021 Indonesian Presidential Award for Innovation in Social Impact. These accolades are a testament to Jejakin’s commitment to sustainability and its impact on businesses and communities worldwide.

Undoubtedly, Jejakin stands at the forefront of the sustainability movement, providing innovative solutions to help businesses reduce their carbon footprint and contribute to sustainability efforts. Through its partnership with Microsoft, Jejakin has created an accessible, effective carbon management and offsetting platform and laid a strong foundation for a scalable, self-sustaining circular economy.

As the world continues prioritizing sustainability, companies like Jejakin will undoubtedly play a crucial role in creating a more sustainable future by helping businesses thrive while preserving the country’s natural resources for future generations.
